Renewal at Rock City’s First Camp

May 29, 2025

Rock City Church, a church plant in Nunawading, held its first camp over Easter and it was such a blessing to everyone that plans are already under way for next year’s camp.

“As well as drawing us closer to Jesus, the camp also drew us closer to one another,” said Senior Pastor Ferdinand Haratua. “The extended time away from our routines gave us room to really see each other, to listen and to share. We left feeling more like a family than when we arrived.”

An atmosphere of physical rest and spiritual renewal was encouraged through a focus on Matthew 11:28-30, where Jesus invites us to come to Him and find rest. The camp theme, “The Heart of Christ: Rest for the Weary”, was woven through each session and activity. “Again and again, people shared how they experienced that rest over the weekend. The sessions helped us see more clearly the beauty of Christ’s heart – gentle, lowly, and welcoming to the weary. It wasn’t just a retreat from busyness; it was a retreat into the arms of Christ.”

The camp was held at Chestnut Hill Lodge in Kallista. While the adults studied and worshipped, the children enjoyed learning about Jesus’ death and resurrection in an age-appropriate and engaging way. They also had an Easter-egg hunt, jumping castle, table tennis and movie night. Outdoor games and board games brought laughter and connection. Marshmallows by the campfire added a sweet finish to each day.

“Many participants shared that their favourite moments were the unplanned ones—those pop-up confession sessions and spontaneous chats by the fire. Others loved simply being together across generations in a beautiful space that allowed for lingering conversations.”

Ferdinand said it was “a beautiful and powerful experience” to be on camp together while celebrating Resurrection Sunday. “Even members and friends who couldn’t attend the full camp made the journey to join us for this worship service. The joy carried into our shared lunch afterward, a true family celebration. We’re already planning next year’s camp. After seeing how deeply this one blessed our church, we can’t wait to do it again.”
